Testing of Effective Phosphorus in Biofertilizers and Feeds

Phosphorus

Phosphorus is one of the essential mineral elements for poultry, a serious deficiency of phosphorus in the feed is manifested by low production performance, rickets in young animals, and softening (or osteoporosis) in adult animals. Phosphorus, as a massive element essential for plant growth, plays a pivotal role in the high yield, quality, and resistance of crops.

Lifeasible can provide easy, rapid, and accurate methods for the detection and evaluation of effective phosphorus in poultry feed and biofertilizer samples. This is important for the precise formulation of biofertilizers and feeds and the efficient use of raw materials.

We can use near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) analysis to measure the absorbance of a sample at different wavelengths in the NIR region and record information on the multiplicity and ensemble frequency absorption of the fundamental frequency vibrations of molecular groups such as CH, NH, or OH.

General test procedure

  • A standard sample with known effective phosphorus content is taken and scanned by NIR to collect spectral information in the 950-1650 nm interval.
  • After pre-processing the spectral information, the chemometric software was applied to correlate the effective phosphorus content with that of the standard sample with the known effective phosphorus content.
  • We used multiple linear regression (MLR), principal component analysis (PCA), principal component regression (PCR) and partial least squares (PLS), topological methods, and artificial neural networks (ANN) to establish quantitative models between NIR and the effective phosphorus content of the samples and to evaluate the predictive performance of the models.
  • The samples to be measured were scanned by NIR and the spectral information in the interval of 950-1650 nm was collected. After pre-processing the spectral information, the NIR information of the sample to be measured was imported into the established quantitative model to obtain the accurate value of the effective phosphorus content of the sample to be measured.

Besides, we also extracted water-soluble phosphorus by grinding with water or ultrasonication and extracted effective phosphorus from fertilizer or feed samples by the oscillation of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or citric acid solution by ultrasonication. The effective phosphorus content is then determined by the quinoline phosphomolybdate weight method or plasma emission spectrometry.
