Analysis of Toxins in Organic Feeds

More factors affecting the quality and safety of organic feed, mainly including the presence of their own toxic and harmful substances in feed materials (such as anti-nutritional factors, mycotoxins, and other natural biotoxins), raw materials production process brings unsafe factors (such as pesticide residues, heavy metals exceed the standard), illegal use of feed additives, illegal use of preventive drugs and sales, use of microbial and drug contamination in the process. They run through the whole process of production, transportation, sales, and use of organic feed.

Feed ingredients containing toxins

Toxic and harmful substances in feeds not only affect the growth and health of animals, but also may remain in the organism of farmed animals, affecting the quality and safety of the final product, and are potential risk factors for human health and life safety. Therefore, Lifeasible can assist customers in assessing the impact of various types of toxins in feed on animal health and safety by providing them with testing services based on a variety of technologies, as well as product detoxification to recover economic losses.

Testing services for toxins

Currently, our methods for the detection of mycotoxins and fungal toxins in organic feeds are thin layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

For the sample extracts, we used TLC and HPLC to Separate structurally similar compounds and contaminants. Toxins were characterized by comparing the Rf values and retention times of the sample and standard chromatograms. Toxins were quantified by fluorescence intensity and absorbance. When the maximum absorption values of some toxins are not known, we usually use GC and GC-MS for detection.

Types of toxins we can detect

ID Name ID Name
1 Aflatoxin (AFT) 6 Patulin (PAT)
2 Ochratoxin (OT) 7 Trichothecene mycotoxin (T-2)
3 Fumonisin (FB) 8 Nivalenol (NIV)
4 Zearalenone (ZEN) 9 Citrinin (CIT)
5 Deoxynivalenol (DON) 10 Ergot alkaloid

Detoxification services

  • Physical detoxification method. Suitable for the detoxification of small batches of feed and feed ingredients.
  • Chemical detoxification method. The most effective for ammonia.
  • Biological detoxification method. The use of the microbial body itself in the adsorption of toxins and specific enzymes produced by microorganisms in the fermentation process of toxin degradation. Can have a better detoxification effect on the AFT in the feed.
  • Adsorption method. Using the principle of ion exchange adsorption of toxins to achieve the effect of degradation of toxins. With the advantages of simple and convenient, low cost.

Toxin contamination is frequent and inevitable in feeds, posing a great risk to public health and causing economic losses to farmers and the industry. Lifeasible can provide you with toxin detection and detoxification services to reduce your economic losses, as well as product quality monitoring to protect your production and R&D.
